artist's statement

I am motivated to create imagery that reflects the capacity of the human spirit and inspires the viewer to connect with their own imagination.

The themes emerge from my minds eye, ‘day dreams’, thoughts, sensations, life experiences and from the 'threads' left behind from preceding artworks. I weave symbols and universal themes with personal mythology and imagery. The artworks then seem to take on an intelligence and power of their own. In this way art making is always playful, revealing and challenging.

My paintings are narrative and figurative in style, showing traces of influence from Byzantine iconography and the folk art of diverse cultures. I take a bold approach to colour and am drawn to the immediecy and tactile quality of collage using predominately paper and fabric on canvas to create striking imagery, pattern and textures.

Periodically I make sculptures using mixed media and found objects. A relationship has been established between my paintings and sculptures that has become a profoundly integral part of my working process.

A few years ago much of my work had been concentrating on reinterpreting mythological themes from my greek heritage and delving into archetypal characters such as the mermaid and fisherman. More recently that mermaid appears to have grown legs, transmuting and exploring other worlds and states of consciousness. This is the only description I'll indulge in for now as I find it satisfying when others derive their own personal meanings.

Picture making is never a lineal process and looking through the work on display in this website you will see a variety of themes, styles and work stemming from different periods and briefs. The paintings and sculptures from the 'Storyteller's Circle' exhibition and all art work subtitled current studio work have been completed since October 2008. In the sections: illustrations and drawings I showcase selected work spanning the last 10 years.
