For me the creative process is a story that unfolds to reveal autobiograhical and universal themes. I believe that the artwork has its own intelligence and can act as a modern talisman. I explore this through paintings and sculptural dolls.
My work is influenced by Byzantine iconography, narrative traditions and folk art from diverse cultures. I take a bold approach to colour, pattern and texture and incoorporate mixed media, collage techniques and found objects. When creating art, I allow happenstance and consious decision making to play a role in its development. The work is enigmatic yet rich with symbolic meaning.
A relationship has been established between my paintings and sculptures that has become a profoundly integral part of my working process. The sculptural dolls have a distinct presence and explore characters from the paintings in a more tangible and tactile manner. They inform my paintings and tease the space that exists between them. The paintings are dynamic and can leap into new dimensions of a theme or set the tone for one that is emerging.
I make art to bring fantasy and reality together. My work reinterpets and recreates mythological themes that relate to me personally and, at the same time explores universal themes of love, transformation and identity. I am fascinated by the process that taps into meaningful and at times powerful narratives that express the human condition.
Occasionally feelings shift with the creation of an image, life is reflected, lessons are given shape, questions are released into the space of a canvas or dreams are held by one of my dolls.
A few years ago much of my work concentrated on reinterpreting mythological themes from my Greek heritage and delving into archetypal characters such as the mermaid and fisherman. More recently that mermaid has grown legs and is exploring other worlds.
